Preventing tooth decay

Tooth decay is one of the most common problems faced , it's caused by the bacteria present in our mouth, the type of food we eat and the oral hygiene routine we practice. Tooth decay can lead to severe infections if left untreated. There are ways you can take care of your oral hygiene and prevent this unpleasant experience of pain and decay.

  1. Eating the right food- Your diet can play an important role in preventing dental decay. Nutritious and balanced diet is the key. Avoid food that are sticky on the tooth surfaces or has an acidic nature. If you consume sticky food like candies, dry fruits etc. remember to rinse your mouth and brush your teeth afterwards.

  1. Flossing your teeth- Flossing your teeth daily is as important as brushing your teeth. Floss your teeth once a day to remove plaque from places your toothbrush doesn’t reach. You can also use an interdental brush (brush designed for the area between two teeth) to clean those surfaces.

  1. Use of fluoridated toothpaste- There are numerous types of toothpastes available in the market, toothpastes containing fluoride (the most common ones) are considered to prevent dental decay. However, every patient’s needs are different so you can choose for toothpaste accordingly.

  1.  Brush Regularly Using the Right Technique and Brush- Brush your teeth the correct way, dentists recommend brushing your teeth twice a day (morning and at night) for at least for 2 minutes each time. Brushing the right way removes plaque build up.
  1. Hydrate!-  Drink at least 9-10 glasses of water per day as it helps with preventing tooth decay along with other benefits. Remember to hydrate yourselves.

  1. Mouthwash- Use of mouthwash along with your oral hygiene routine helps to remove plaque and prevent decay. Swish the mouthwash for 30 seconds then spit the solution out in the sink.  Remember a mouthwash can cure serious problems like decay for gum problems and just using a mouthwash isn’t enough. Brushing and flossing is important for good oral hygiene.

  1. Use of sealants- These are dental materials which are used to coat/ seal areas on the tooth which are more prone to decay due to the shape of the tooth structure. It doesn’t allow decay formation. Ask your nearest dentist about the available and most suitable sealant options for you.

  1. Regular dental appointments – Don’t forget to visit the dentist every 6 months and get your full mouth checked. As recommended by dental professionals, get your teeth cleaned every 6-8 months to prevent decay.
  2. Follow the dentist's instructions- Discuss your oral hygiene habits and diet with your dentist. Do not delay any treatment advised by the dentist , as it can later lead to even bigger problems. Follow the recommendations given by your dentist regarding how to brush, product recommendation and other preventive measures.
